Driving in Spain – Mistake #3: Driving While Speaking on the Phone

This is a classic.

I don’t know how it is in your country but, in Spain, it is an offence to speak on the phone while driving.

I’m aware that, in many countries, you can use your phone while driving as, in the state of Illinois, where I spent five years of my life, it was not banned at all.

Years later, someone told me that a new law in this state had restricted the use of phones in areas under construction. Other than that, it looks like you can still use the phone while driving in Illinois.

In Spain, it is prohibited. Banned. No exceptions.

This includes not only speaking in the traditional way of the phone to the ear and holding it with one hand.

It is also illegal to:

  • Activate a hands-free phone and talk, while having the handset on your lap, or as a walkie-talkie.
  • Use headphones while driving, with either large or small ones inserted in the ear.

Do you see why you should not do any of these?

It’s simple: to avoid distractions that may cause an accident.

The fine is €200. And if you have a Spanish driving licence, three points will be deducted.

How to avoid this mistake

Install an approved hands-free system with Bluetooth, which of course includes a built-in microphone in the car. In-ear Bluetooth, such as the previous image, is also banned.

The other option is that, if you really do need to talk to someone, pull over into a safe place to do so.

Never stop the vehicle on the side of the road, on the hard shoulder or on the motorway, as I have seen on several occasions.

Find a safe place, with no risk to anybody.
